MEDIA STATEMENT

Johannesburg, Thursday, 6 February 2025 – Public Interest SA welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement during his State of the Nation Address of the government’s commitment to introducing the long-awaited Whistleblower Protection Bill during the 7th Parliament. This marks a crucial step toward strengthening protections for whistleblowers and fostering a more accountable and transparent society.

As a civil society organisation dedicated to promoting integrity and good governance, Public Interest SA looks forward to engaging in the legislative process and making substantive submissions to the Bill once the draft is published. Ensuring robust protections for whistleblowers is fundamental to combatting corruption, safeguarding democracy, and encouraging individuals to come forward without fear of reprisal.

We urge Parliament to prioritise this Bill and ensure its swift processing to create a legal framework that truly supports and protects whistleblowers. Public Interest SA remains committed to working with all stakeholders to enhance the whistleblower ecosystem and strengthen mechanisms that uphold accountability and justice in South Africa.
