MEDIA STATEMENT
Cape Town, Friday, 7 March 2025 - Public Interest SA is outraged and deeply saddened by the tragic and senseless assassination of renowned activist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Pamela Mabini, who was brutally gunned down outside her home in Gqeberha.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, and the countless individuals whose lives she touched through her selfless advocacy and unwavering commitment to justice. South Africa has lost a fearless warrior who dedicated her life to standing up for the voiceless, defending the rights of women and children, and fighting against the rampant crime that plagues our communities.
Mabini’s tireless efforts to uplift the underprivileged and expose the failings of law enforcement in tackling crime have come at a devastating cost. Her tragic murder is yet another stark reminder of the immense dangers faced by activists, whistleblowers, and those who challenge the status quo in our country. It is utterly unacceptable that those who champion justice continue to be hunted down with impunity.
Public Interest SA calls on law enforcement authorities to act with urgency in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous, callous murder to justice. We demand a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation, with no stone left unturned. It is imperative that those responsible for this barbaric act are held to account and that the message is sent loud and clear: South Africa will not stand by as its bravest citizens are executed in cold blood.
Furthermore, we urge the government to prioritize the safety and protection of activists and whistleblowers, who remain under constant threat for their courageous work. If justice is to mean anything in this country, then it must be seen to be done — swiftly and decisively.
“Pamela Mabini’s legacy of compassion, resilience, and fearless activism must not be in vain. We will continue to honour her memory by demanding justice and standing firm against the impunity that emboldens criminals to silence those who seek a better South Africa,” said Tebogo Khaas, Public Interest SA chairman.
