Public Interest SA Applauds the Formation of New Cabinet by President Ramaphosa

Media Statement

For Immediate Release

30 June 2024

Public Interest SA welcomes the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding the new cabinet appointments, following the agreement between the African National Congress (ANC) and ten other political parties to form a Government of National Unity. This significant step, initiated just a month ago after the watershed elections, marks the beginning of a new chapter in South African governance, filled with hope and expectations for a transformative administration.

We commend the establishment of this Government of National Unity, which brings together a diverse range of political parties, including the Democratic Alliance, Patriotic Alliance, Inkatha Freedom Party, Good Party, Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, Freedom Front Plus, United Democratic Movement, Al Jama-ah, Rise Mzansi, and the United Africans Transformation. The collaborative efforts to address the pressing needs of our nation reflect a commitment to the principles of accountability, transparency, and evidence-based policy-making.

Public Interest SA is particularly pleased with the strategic changes in the Education, Communications and Digital Technologies, Home Affairs, Police, and Trade, Industry and Competition portfolios. These ministries, which have previously underperformed, are now poised for revitalisation and focused efforts to drive meaningful progress. We trust that the newly appointed ministers and their deputies will prioritise national interests over narrow party-political agendas.

The time for petty politicking is over. The electorate has spoken, and it is now imperative for our political leaders and public representatives to put their best foot forward. Public Interest SA calls on all South Africans to support the new administration as it tackles the myriad of challenges facing our nation. We are committed to working constructively with the Government of National Unity to ensure that our democracy functions effectively and serves the needs of all citizens.

Public Interest SA pledges its unwavering support to the new administration which is constituted by people with experience, skills and and capabilities to deliver on its mandate. We will, however, continue in our duty to hold accountable those entrusted with the exercise of public power in the public interest. We encourage all stakeholders, including civil society groups, labour, business, and other formations, to participate actively in the forthcoming National Dialogue. Together, we can address the critical issues and build a prosperous and just society.

Let us all unite behind this new government and contribute to the transformation and renewal of our beloved country.
