Defending Digital Integrity

Understanding Cybercrime

Cybercrime refers to criminal activities that involve computers, networks, and digital platforms. As South Africa undergoes rapid digital transformation, cybercriminals exploit technological advancements to commit fraud, identity theft, financial crimes, and cyberattacks on individuals, businesses, and government institutions.

The Growing Threat

Cybercrime is one of the fastest-growing forms of criminal activity worldwide, with South Africa being a prime target due to its increasing digital economy and high internet penetration. Some of the most common cybercrimes affecting individuals and organizations in South Africa include:

  • Phishing & Social Engineering – Fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information such as passwords and banking details.

  • Ransomware Attacks – Malicious software that encrypts data, demanding ransom for its release.

  • Identity Theft – Unauthorised access to personal information to commit fraud.

  • Financial Fraud & Online Scams – Fake investment schemes, digital fraud, and online transaction manipulation.

  • Cyber Extortion – Threats to release sensitive information unless a ransom is paid.

  • Data Breaches – Unauthorized access to confidential data affecting businesses and individuals.

  • SIM Card Fraud – Criminals use fraudulent means to obtain a duplicate SIM card linked to a victim's phone number, allowing them to intercept calls, messages, and banking OTPs, leading to unauthorized access to financial accounts and personal data.

The Impact on Society

The consequences of cybercrime extend beyond financial losses. It erodes trust in digital services, disrupts critical infrastructure, compromises national security, and violates privacy rights. Vulnerable communities and whistleblowers are particularly at risk of targeted cyberattacks designed to silence them.
